5-A-Day Habit

Right after the eating festival that was Christmas, we decided that it was time to clean up…our bodies, that is. And to kick things off, we gave the new juicer some work to do. Good thing that fruits were aplenty so we had lots to juice. Threw in some veggies for good measure. And voila, we came up with several 5-A-Day concoctions. Yummy, healthy, and…yellow.

Fraise avec le Chocolat

Chocolate Dipped Strawberry

Everything about this spells romance.

We had several of these when we had our pre-Valentines lunch….with the kids. And we all enjoyed. Who says Valentine’s is just for lovers, right.

Java

I’m a coffee drinker. Addict is more like it. I can consume up to 5 mugs…MUGS…a day of brew on any given day. And I’m not picky. As long as I get some caffeine going in my system, I’m pretty much good to go.

This affliction started at a very early age. My Lola used to allow me to dip my cream cheese sandwiches in her cup of coffee to give it a sweet, bitter, and salty flavor. I absolutely loved it. Sometimes I would even have our helper make me a cup just for dunking my sandwiches. I wouldn’t drink it though. There was this belief going around that kids who drank coffee wouldn’t grow up. So no drinking.

The drinking came in at around college time. And it was because of a damn accounting course. It was my first class every Tuesday and Thursday. It was so boring that I would literally fall asleep in class. So to remedy this I learned how to drink coffee. And I started hardcore. Black as hell. No sugar. No cream. A habit I continue to enjoy today.

Today I like variety. I like instant. I like Starbucks….Tall Cafe Latte’ Nonfat No Syrup One Splenda! I like home grown Barako…especially when paired up with a grilled Ensaymada. And most of all, I like it freshly brewed in my 3 cup French press. Yum yum!!

So excuse me, I need to get myself a MUG.

Adi’s Fresh Haul From School

Adi’s favorite dish of all time has to be Sinigang. She loves anything sour. She constantly bugs me to cook this for her and being a doting Mom, I always do.

Right outside her school’s wall stands an old kamias tree. Every summer it is heavily laden with fruits that, more often than not, remain unpicked. It is rather common to see the fruits just falling off and being squashed by the cars that come to pick up the kids.

So one morning I encouraged Adi to bring me home some kamias which I would make sinigang with. I was acutally kidding. But lo and behold, she asked the school aide to help her pick the fruits and this is what she brought home for me. We had sinigang that night. Lots of it.

How Do You Like Your Eggs?

Just about anybody loves eggs..right. Scrambled, sunny side up, over easy, poached, coddled, or hardboiled. We just love eggs. However, eating them on a daily basis may prove hazardous to our health. Eggs are high in cholesterol and are said to cause high blood pressure if eaten too often. Health nuts have resorted to replacing whole eggs with egg whites only. Personally, I don’t go for this. It just lacks the flavor and the body of whole eggs. I’d rather have my eggs whole even if it means having them only twice or thrice a week.
